Just got back from Doughty Street. I really enjoyed tonight. I was on with two very nice people, Mike Denham from the wonderful Burning our Money blog and Mark Pack, a historian. I also got to rant at length about a certan blogspat that I don't like to talk about because I don't like to give airtime to that blogging fascist who wants us all to conform to what he considers a "real" political blog.
And finally I found a story worth blogging about in the papers. John Amaechi is apparently about to come out as the first openly gay professional basketball player in the states. I find this story interesting because I have long been fascinated with the lack of open homosexuals in the sports world. Famously the only openly gay footballer we've ever had in this country famously killed himself. Homosexuality seems to conjur up a lot more fear and hatred in the US than here. John Amaeichi is English and apparently plays for the English basketball team (I didn't know we had one!). Is it possible that the wonderfully accepting society we've fostered in Britain means our sportstars feel more able to come out and still be accepted. Has Graham Norton managed to take gay rights across the atlantic?
What I think is important about this is that once one person has the courage to stand up and be honest then it paves the way for others to do so. Premiership football has often been cited as helping to promote better race relations. If we had some gay premiership footballers then it could promote more acceptance of homosexuality.
So basically I applaud John Amaeichi's decision and I hope it gives other people the courage they need to come out.

It's the "gay lobby" and its powerful influence in Whitehall that many Conservatives dislike. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/26/ngay326.xml
Caroline, which Doughty St. programme did you appear on?
It was an excellent discussion all round - maybe the best Blogger TV on many levels. You kicked ass. I was a bit taken aback by Mark Pack's assertion that newspapers publish critical letters. In respect of critical comment find that they only publish ineffective stuff.
Why are you so obsessed with gays?
The girl just loves boy-on-boy action.
It would be as well to remember, Caroline, that a prime reason for the homophobia and crude taunting against gays that still lingers on the football terraces and in some schools was largely due to the Thatcher government's endorsement of Section 28 and similar discriminatory measures.
I've known an abundance of gay people in the Tory party, in and out of Parliament, since I first began campaigning for gay rights in the 1950s. The only difference today is that, mainly thanks to others, they no longer have to keep up their traditional humbuggery.
Thankyou Caroline, it's so good to hear a top tory blogger standing up to the last acceptable form of discrimination. Being 22 and having just joined the Conservative Party it is nice to know that there are some people who wouldn't prefer that I join the Lib Dems or just die (fyi i'd rather die.)Please keep up the good work and yes, Tim Ireland is a fascist.
Istanbultory - I was there for Vox Politics and the End of the Day Show last night.
Praguetory - you've made me blush! But yeah I really enjoyed it. I've been on and really not enjoyed it before. It's totally down to the mix of guests.
Anticant - Indeed and I condemn section 28 now as much as I did then. I was very pleased, when attending the Stonewall fringe at part conference this year, to hear Margot James and Nick Herbert MP make the same condemnation of section 28.
Henry - I thoroughly agree.
Thanks, Caroline. I've just added a link to your site in my "friendly places" list on 'anticant's arena' - a new blog I've just started as "a civilised debating space for the exchange of information and views about politics, society, and the human condition". Hope you'll return the compliment, and also look in at anticant's burrow sometimes - a more personal blog where you may find some interesting archival stuff.
I just do not understand the obsession with gays?
You should take the test:
http://www.channel4.com/gayometer
Took the test - got 56% gay!
33%

Great minds must think alike...
We in Stoke Newington ponder whether a premier league player will ever do the same?
Hmmmm, 'blogging fascist', you say?
What a shame that post has now been taken down Justin, at the threat of legal action.
