Well the BBC is running David Miliband's comments on Question Time tonight as a "gaffe". Yes, taken out of context, I can see that "people will be saying "oh wouldn't it be great to have that Blair back, because we can't stand that Gordon Brown" doesn't look to good. And of course it's really not my role to defend Miliband and it was a bloody stupid thing to say. HOWEVER...I don't really think there is a lot to be read into this comment. Yes Millie is a Blairite golden boy but if you actually watch the footage it is quite clear that he was making the point that people will always knock whoever is in government - not that Gordon Brown is shit.
But it is true - Gordon Brown will be shit. And maybe that really was Millie's purpose in his proported "gaffe" - an excusable slip to put the idea into people's brains that they should keep Blair for as long as possible. Or maybe I'm crediting New Labour with far too much brain power!

Gordo will clearly be “shit” but he is the ultimate conspirator and is finally maneouvering himself into the position which he believes is his by “divine right”. Miliband has naturally come under pressure from supporters of Blair to challenge Brown for the leadership. They want Labour to "skip a generation" and choose Mr Miliband to take on the Conservative leader, at the next election. In Mid-January DM himself warned in the Torygraph that "Fourth term governments are unusual for simple reasons of boredom and fatigue. These are the perils of 'governmentalitis’ – too many red boxes, too many Ministerial cars, too many 'events’,". DM warned Gordo not to give in to demands from Labour MPs and the unions to scale back plans for involving the private and voluntary sectors in the provision of public services. Dave realises that Gordo will be “shit” and is positioning himself early on for Labour’s defeat in 2009. At the same time, he has to be restrained in how he deals with the Chancellor. He needs to be in the Cabinet for the duration. Ambitious he may be but David is sub-Gordo, IMHO.
After all, Miliband is the chap who is seeking to undermine public opposition to the EU by re-branding it the "Environmental Union". Of course, some Labour strategists believe climate change can draw the sting from Eurosceptic hostility to new EU powers presented in a revived EU constitution/treaty. If DM believes that kind of “shit”, then he really is intellectually challeneged. It doesn’t matter that our our Environment Secretary, was rightly "under fire" a few weeks ago for his "hypocrisy" in carting off his entourage to India on a fact-finding mission that emitted epic amounts of carbon and generally helped not to save the planet. After Gordo, DM will make an "ideal opponent".
I think you are right about Milliband's comment- read in a minimal context what he is saying is absolutely clear and actually its a sensible political point.
I'm not sure Brown will be an awful PM the thing I think that he will have problems with is accepting advice- there was a wonderful Peter Hennessay interview on Doughty Street about this and Hennessy got Brown jsut right- its the advice point I think where Brown will fail.
Miliband's comments suggest that he believes he is in touch with what the average guy in the street (i.e. me) really thinks.
Here is a man who thinks we should be 'investing' in hyrbid cars, minature windmills and solar panels. He want's us to imgaine a day when 'carbon becomes a new currency' and give us all little swipe cards to be cloned by Lithunanain techno-fraudsters, so they can diversify their dodgy activities into 'carbon fraud'.
One only has to read his website to get a clear picture of the cloud-cuckoo-land this idiot lives in. The arrogance of the man knows no bounds.
Although he is right in what he says, after a few months of Brown I'm sure I will be wishing for the return of Blair. As will everyone else who doesn't rely on tax credits to pay the mortgages on their over-priced shacks.
DD 'grilled' him on this. Shame he ignored all the puff he gave out for the rest of the show. Imbecile.
i think that some context is required here...
see.
